Window screens in the older houses here have usually been in place for years. Frames get a little out of square, the spline dries out, and the mesh turns brittle in the sun. A rough scrub tears them.

We take each screen out by its frame, wash it gently, rinse with pure water and set it back square so it doesn't rattle. If one isn't going to survive, we leave it alone and tell you. Doing screens with the windows stops salt in the mesh from washing back onto the clean glass.
