In Old Naples the landscaping is packed in close. Hedges, beds and sprinkler heads sit a few feet from the windows on most of these lots, so the lower panes on the planted side of the house usually carry a white crust that the rest of the glass doesn't. That's irrigation water drying on the glass over and over, not salt.

What we do about it depends on the window. The older cottages mostly have plain glass, and on those we lift the spotting with 0000 steel wool worked wet. Newer homes on the same street usually have coated or impact glass, and steel wool never goes on that. We check every pane first and tell you if any of it has already etched, because etching can't be taken out.
