Professional window cleaners use two main methods: the traditional mop and squeegee, and the newer pure-water system fed through a long pole. Both produce clean glass. They work in completely different ways, and each one is genuinely better at certain jobs — which is why we use both.

How squeegee cleaning works
Squeegee work is applied physics. A little soap in the water drops its surface tension, so the water spreads across the pane in a sheet instead of beading up. A wet mop scrubs the dirt loose into that sheet. Then the squeegee's rubber blade pulls the water — and everything dissolved and suspended in it — off the glass in one continuous pass, before anything can dry. The edges and sill get detailed with a dry towel, and the pane is done.
Done well, the result is flawless. The method's real strengths are control and precision: almost no water escapes, which is exactly what you want standing over a wood floor, a sill full of decor, or an interior ledge.
How pure-water cleaning works
Pure-water cleaning starts with the water itself. Tap water carries dissolved minerals — measured as total dissolved solids, or TDS — and those minerals are what dry into spots. A deionizing filter strips those minerals out until almost nothing is left in the water but water. That pure water is fed up a telescoping pole to a soft brush, which scrubs the glass while the water flows, and the pane gets a final rinse of nothing but purified water.
No squeegee follows, and no towel — on purpose. The rinse water sheets off, and what little remains evaporates without leaving anything behind, because there's nothing in it to leave. The pole also means second- and third-story glass gets cleaned from the ground: no ladder against the stucco, no footprints in the landscaping beds.
One honest caveat: pure water cleans, it doesn't grind. On glass that has been maintained, the brush-and-rinse takes everything off. On a first visit to glass that sat neglected for a few seasons, deposits that have chemically bonded to the surface won't rinse away no matter how pure the water is — that's a separate, by-hand stain removal job before the maintenance rhythm takes over. A good cleaner tells you which situation you have instead of pretending one wash fixes both.
Why pure water dries spot-free
A water spot is not dried water — it's the cargo the water was carrying. When a drop evaporates, every mineral dissolved in it stays behind on the glass as a tiny white ring. Take the minerals out of the water first, and the spot has nothing to be made of. That's the entire trick, and it's why the glass can air-dry clear.
There's a quieter benefit too: no soap. Squeegee work done sloppily leaves a thin detergent film, and that film is sticky — it grabs dust and pollen and re-dirties the glass faster. A pure-water rinse leaves bare glass, which stays cleaner longer for the same reason a rinsed dish out-lasts a soapy one.
Where each method wins
- Interior glass: squeegee — total water control, nothing drips on floors or furniture
- Ground-floor exterior detail: a hand-squeegee finish gives eye-level panes a final polish
- Upper-story exterior glass: pure water — full reach from the ground, no ladders against the house
- Salted coastal glass: pure water — the flowing rinse flushes salt out of frame edges and weep holes that a blade passes right over
- Screens and frames: pure water — the brush and rinse clean the whole window opening, not just the pane
Notice the pattern: the squeegee wins wherever precision matters, and pure water wins wherever reach, volume, or salt is the problem. On a coastal exterior, that's most of the job — a Gulf-side home is a reach-and-salt problem on every side of the house, every week of the year.
The honest DIY notes
Squeegee technique is learnable, and for ground-floor glass it's a fine weekend skill: dish soap, a decent mop and blade, a stack of dry towels for the edges, and some patience with the streaks while you learn the fanning stroke. Nothing about it is secret — the pros are just faster and cleaner at the same physics.
DIY pure water is a harder sell. Home deionizing cartridges exist, but Southwest Florida water is hard, and hard water exhausts deionizing resin quickly — the harder the water going in, the faster the filter gives out. Once the rinse creeps above roughly ten parts per million of dissolved solids, spots start coming back. If you try it, buy a TDS meter and trust the number, not how clean the water looks.
